What is Kindness?
An act of kindness is a spontaneous gesture of goodwill towards someone or something.
On November 13th 2016 it is World Kindness Day. This simple heart-warming tradition started back in 1998. It is a day were us humans are encouraged to preform an act of kindness no matter how big or small, to show how the power of positive actions connects us all on a deeper level.
Kindness must start with yourself, as many people believe that being kind to others is all about self sacrifice while putting your owns needs last. This could not be further from the truth. First you need to be kind and nice to yourself so you don’t end up resenting all the kindness you bestow on to others. Ways to be kind to yourself is by banishing all negative thoughts about yourself. Compliment yourself and take note of all the flattering and gracious comments that others have said. Every night before bed read these comments to give your self-esteem that boost that we all need.
Yes awful things happen but the secret is not to dwell on them, how hard this may be. Life is about celebrating the good. I now i celebrate getting home at the end of everyday and how wonderful it is to spend the rest of the evening with my family. Especially with the dreary winter weather that is approaching us here in Ireland. When your having one of those days think of all the times someone has been kind to you. Just think of the time someone had held the door open for you, helped you pack your shopping or just says’Hello’ and asks ‘How are you?’
Kindness starts with each and everyone of us. Yes that means you! You should never underestimate the power that one small act of kindness can do for someone. Kindness starts of with humble beginnings, something as simple as a smile can brighten up someones day. Each time you smile at someone you are giving them a small cheery gift that may make all the difference to their day.
Other ways to be kind to others:
Being kind enhances your self-esteem and lowers blood pressure and creates a natural by generating feel good hormones. This increases your own happiness which means that you attract more positive and pleasant situations that happen around you, emanating positive energy to others around you also. Acts of kindness have a wonderful feeling and will have a snowball effect on others which can make the world a better place.
So why not make the 13th November 2016 the day kindness becomes an everyday part of your life. Go on give it a go!!!!
